All guards know that working a post for 8 hours has its challenges. One of those challenges is what to do when things are a bit let's say "slow". Most post orders explicitly state that guards will not be on their personal cell phones, except for emergencies or during their breaks. However, it's tempting to pull out our cell phones and spend the "slow" minutes/hours texting, posting or dare I say it watching videos! Others are watching the security guard and their opinion of the guard can be diminished if a guard gets the reputation of simply "being on their phone" while on shift.
The client knows you are violating your agreed-upon contract with your employer (PPO) and this can tarnish the security company's reputation within the industry.
Excessive abuse of the cell phone policy can cause other guards who share your post to look upon you as less than professional as your constant phone violations cause them to also look bad in the client's eyes.
Know your company's policy on personal cell phone use and follow it as you have agreed to. This will add to your professionalism and help keep you safe as cell phone abuse can lead to lowered situational awareness.
