What Is Covered

Being an effective security guard in handling difficult people requires a range of skills, including strong communication skills, conflict management skills, the ability to speak constructively, the ability to value diversity, negotiating skills, and verbal diffusion skills. Here are some tips on how to be effective in each of these areas:

Communications: As a security guard, you need to be able to communicate effectively with people in all situations. This means being able to listen actively, respond appropriately, and convey information clearly and concisely. You should also be able to use nonverbal communication effectively, such as body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice.

Conflict Management: Conflict is inevitable in any setting, and as a security guard, you need to be able to manage it effectively. This means understanding the root causes of conflict, remaining calm under pressure, and using de-escalation techniques to diffuse tense situations.

Speaking Constructively: As a security guard, you are often in a position of authority and need to be able to communicate in a way that is respectful and constructive. This means avoiding negative language, using positive reinforcement when possible, and framing your message in a way that encourages cooperation and collaboration.

Valuing Diversity: In today's diverse society, it's important to be able to value and appreciate different perspectives and experiences. As a security guard, you need to be able to recognize and respect cultural differences, avoid making assumptions, and treat everyone with respect and dignity.

Negotiating Skills: Negotiation is an important skill for any security guard to have, as it allows you to resolve conflicts and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. This means being able to listen actively, find common ground, and communicate clearly and persuasively.

Verbal Diffusion: Sometimes, despite your best efforts, conflict may still escalate. In these situations, it's important to be able to use verbal diffusion techniques to calm people down and de-escalate the situation. This might involve using humor, changing the subject, or simply acknowledging the person's feelings and concerns.

By mastering these skills, you can become an effective security guard in handling difficult people, and help to create a safe and secure environment for everyone involved.

Guard Duty Corp Difference

While online security guard training courses may offer convenience, they cannot compare to the benefits of learning in person from a qualified instructor. Online courses can be seen as a shortcut to getting a certificate, but lack the personalized attention and practical experience provided by in-person training. In-person training provides students with the opportunity to receive real-time feedback and personalized attention, as well as the chance to practice their skills in simulated real-world scenarios.

In a classroom you can ask questions, debate situations, and engage in experiential learning that reinforces the complex rules and regulations associated with the security field.

Why try to teach yourself how to be a 21st-century security guard when you can have our experienced staff with over 20 years of security and law enforcement experience guide you?

It is my sincere pleasure to write a review for Dr. Will. I took the Basic Firearm class, in January 2023. I was a person who never felt there was a need to handle, let alone be in possession of a firearm. Dr. Will made me, and the other members of the class feel comfortable. He shared information with us, that allowed me to make my best decision. Secondly, I felt his patience and clarity in instruction made the class rewarding and informative.  We finished the classroom instruction with training at the firing range. The range experience was positive because I could use the information given in the classroom setting with practical application. Once again, his attention to detail, clarity in instructions, and patience made the experience positive and the knowledge valuable.
